Job Shadows: A Glimpse of the Profession

For students at the secondary level (middle/junior high and high school), a job shadow can provide a great look at the daily work of a CPA. The idea is to spend a day at an accounting firm, or in the accounting department of a business, with a CPA to see if the career is of interest to you.

Many WSCPA members are willing to host job shadows at their offices, as long as it does not conflict with their work schedules. To do a job shadow, it is necessary to go through your school first to make sure that you follow the proper procedure and have clearance to leave school for a shadow day. This should be done through your career counselor or guidance counselor at school. Each school has its own policies with regard to job shadow opportunities, so it's important to check with them to make sure you are following their guidelines.
